In 2023, the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church hosted an impactful event centered on Heather McGee’s powerful book, The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together. This thought-provoking gathering brought the community together to explore the systemic costs of racism and the steps we can take to foster unity and prosperity for all.
The event featured an engaging discussion on McGee’s insights into the American economy and its frequent failures to serve the public equitably. Described by the Chicago Tribune as “a book with the potential to radically shift our cultural conversation,” The Sum of Us offered a lens into the hidden costs of living apart and the transformative power of coming together as a community.
Attendees were treated to a complimentary copy of the book and a delicious dinner provided by Smokin Wings & Things at Westgate Mall. The event encouraged families to participate in meaningful dialogue about how divisions in society harm everyone—and how unity can pave the way for shared success.

In 2023, the Spartanburg Juneteenth BEC Gala delivered an unforgettable evening filled with celebration, community spirit, and a deep commitment to empowering local small businesses and non-profit organizations.
The event kicked off in style with a red-carpet experience at 5:00 PM, setting the stage for an evening of elegance and festivity. At 6:30 PM, the main gala commenced, featuring a spectacular lineup of live performances, an entertaining lip sync contest, and inspiring award presentations. Seven small businesses received essential funding to support their growth, while five non-profits competed in a lively lip-sync contest, with the winner earning an $800 grant.
The night didn’t end there. At 8:30 PM, attendees kept the energy high at the Gala Party, enjoying music from DJ Kurious George, dancing, and refreshments. It was a perfect setting to connect with fellow community members, awardees, and performers while honoring the spirit of Juneteenth and the invaluable contributions of Spartanburg’s local businesses and non-profits.
